My Turn To Drive The New Rig!

We are planning a trip that will take us from Henderson, Nevada to Ft. Lupton, Colorado via Spokane, Washington through Idaho, Montana, Wyoming and Colorado! All using old highways, limited exposure to major highways. Our 2 Australian Shepherds, are also new to this smaller rig. Wish us luck.

Our plan is to utilize as many Harvest Hosts, Cabella’s and mooch docking as much as possible. Our goal is no more than 4 hours on the road per day. Pre planned meals and at least 3 – 30 minute walks with the dogs per day. They are going to be so stressed not to have their regular trip hammock. Do any of you have safety ideas for dogs in a class B+ van? We are used to pulling a rig not driving it.

Many RVs use the same brand of refrigerators, Air Conditioners, Microwave/Conduction Ovens, wiring and plumbing. We have never had or utilized an onboard generator or slide out.

Previously I would pack our Airstream and not fill it with our equipment, clothing etc. This new rig is so much smaller it takes a lot of reorganization to prepare for the trip. This was really not that much of challenge but the murphy bed is daunting. It is really heavier than we realized and the living space is impacted. We really are like newbies in many ways, especially space use with our pups too.

I was proud of myself that I did do some minor decorating in our rig to make it feel more ours.

Galley, added peel and stick tile and command strip shelf. Oh yes and paper towel holder!

Packing the galley was easier than I thought it would be. It is small but the large window and burner cover make it look larger and comfy. It makes me smile to see it and use it. When the Murphy Bed is open. The doggies can easily place their paws on the counter. Another training moment. Goodies are to be placed as far away as possible after dinner.

I do like that we do not have to go outside in the in the cold dark, rain or snow to utilize the interior for our comfort. The automatic steps are a death trap for short people with knee problems. The doggies are small and the smallest one takes a minute to prepare to hop into the rig. Once the battery had dropped and the steps did not come out. My hubby did not notice, jammed his right knee and even the doggies were challenged to go out of the rig.

All new learning experiences. In my next blog I will review what we did as far as planning and you can shake your head and laugh.

Until the next time.

Yes We Can!

It is now January 2016 and we have a big plan in mind!  We want to have a family camp out in Yellowstone National Park.  Yep a 12 person get together for three generations.  This will be a first camp out for my two oldest children and their children.  There will be two trailers and one family in a nearby hotel.  Our travel start day is 27 May 2016!

I have a countdown calendar and already gathering items for our get together, scheduling trailer servicing, preparing menus, and planning activities for us all to enjoy.  I did ask the youngest  girls for their ideas and they want smores.

I am really lucky in the friends in my life who are giving me tons of information and inside input on how the park works.  Now we are really getting excited to plan, plan, plan.  This is so exciting for us.  We, after seven years, we are just now really  becoming comfortable with the Airstream dream and embracing the experiences yet to come.  Stay tuned for our little journeys and prep for the big day.

This must be our year for our dreams of travel come true.  I received silver rivet earrings for a Christmas present and a dear friend of ours made us a beautiful reminder of our dream!  A stained glass replica of our rig!  The silver beauty we love.

Update to today!  The work is done, cleaning and updating stuff done, now food and excitement are our focus.  We are going to tryout many items that should engage children and adults in old-fashioned, non-tech family fun.  An ice cream maker that looks like a soccer ball, traveling eco friendly fire pit for s’moors and a large propane outdoor cookstove so us oldies don’t bend over the fire to cook!

Our fun season starts in a week with a shakedown to recheck all repairs and new “stuff”.  This well be a great wine and food experience!  Six Sigma here we come!  Then onto Idaho and Yellowstone!

Bon Voyage and Great Wine!

Winter wonderland and travel

OMG!  Here I am making gifts of herb butters and planning a New Years trip.  How do we plan our destinations and missions due for completion.  Ohhhh that does not sound like fun.

Our cozy Airstream awaits its new mattress pad especially made for our 20 foot Flying Cloud .  We are planing a quick 5 day jaunt to Idaho.  The aroma of the herbal butters and cookie dough makes me think . . . . Oh what we could do to use these to enhance our travels.

We just did a pick up of our favorite wines in Lake County California,  Six Sigma!  It made us remember that friends, associates and the journey mean so much more and enhance our gentle luxuries.  Great wine, great friends, and the feelings of the moment.

As I prepare luscious herbal butters for gifts I think, oh what a wonderful treat as we traverse the winter highways to our special destination . . . Eagle, Idaho and our daughter and grandchildren.  We had not ever thought this would be a destination over the holidays but what a thrill!

Sumptuous plans for a gentle road trip.   The snow will dictate our travel time as will our time restraints.  We have  five days and how do we plan?   The Airstream makes the travel a breeze.  We do not worry about warmth and comfort as it is so well insulated we are always comfy.  I have come to appreciate the thought put into its design.   There is no wasted space, we can hunker down in a monsoon, wind storm and blizzard!  It has taken me five years to appreciate the design and thought put into our Flying Cloud.

So we plan for our creature luxuries, menu for New Years Eve, nosh on the road and reservations on the way to our destination.  Just think herbed butter, we made, rib steaks, garlic mashed potatoes, sautéed green beans with butter and shallots, Six Sigma 2009 Tempranillo and French press coffee with espresso shortbread cookies to bring in the new year!  No matter where we are, if in our Airstream, we know we are not only warm and safe, we are more than comfortable.

We hope to bring in the New Year with style and panache!  We do not need to be ever stylish but we know less is more and it is the little luxuries that make our lives special.

MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL AND A WONDERFUL RIVETTED AIRSTREAM NEW YEAR

Momma Mia –

Napa Style did it again! Now you can have the same tubular spice experience with the stackable spice as the 12 spice travel spice tube but now a 9 spice assortment for Italian cooking! Yep now you have your choice. Same price as the larger one but only one spice is in the Italian choices that is not in the larger one. I still like this idea because you can make your own mixes too.

Theses can actually last for a long time if stored in a dark, cool, dry space!  They are so small and fit well in the smallest pantry.  Nice go to on the road and you can replenish them with fresh when back home.

Settlng to enjoy another restful dinner by the stream Ahhh
A setting to enjoy another restful dinner by the stream at Shaw’s Shady Acres

We were so thankful that our best friends introduced us to the most wonderful Farmer’s market to enhance our traveling kitchen.  The Calistoga Farmers Market  is always waiting for discovery by new friends.  The locals get to enjoy the freshest, most beautiful fish, veggies, flowers, fruits and cooked delicacies ever.    We were ready to create with our Mobile Herbs!

The fresh caught white fish was a delicacy with just a little olive oil, fresh thyme and a sprinkling of salt and pepper done in our simple cast iron pan.  hmmmm so tasty and flakey.  Italian green beans with garlic, butter and olive oil, the local peasant bread and Sauvignon Blanc from Six Sigma made the evening so much more.  Relaxing in the evening with friends and food is what life is all about.

The next evening the local market had organic rib eye steaks on sale!  Smoked Hickory flavored salt rubbed on the sides with a little olive oil, hot cast iron over the outside grill, fresh salad greens with sliced local green apples and goat cheese was mouth-watering!  Add a little Coppola’s table red and you have a meal to enjoy by the stream at the Shaw’s Shady Acres with our stowed treasures to complete the scene.   Traveling to eat and enjoy is a nice carrot to get us out the door!

A Foodie Must

Glorious, wonderful roads take us many places.  How we travel them is a choice.  We prefer going where others don’t.  If hoards of tourists gather we will go in an opposite path.  Nuggets of golden information and joy pop-up in unpredictable places.

Saturday was such a time.  Traveling on a day trip with friends and without my silver coach we tasted wines from a barrel, savored great small plates of food paired for us in the 92 degree heat.  So what was so unusual?  The chef.  We sat and spoke with Chef Mark Linback who works with Six Sigma Ranch and Winery, gave us his recommendations of the “must haves” for our Airstream Galley!  His suggestions: 1 lb of flour, regular salt, salted and unsalted butter, olive oil-either EVOO or VOO, your favorite spices and baking power.  Why?  To make pastry, scones, coat fish or chicken, be able to fry anything and add the spices you like to make new finds your kind of yummy.

The ChefThe small goodie tray

I have often wondered how long you can keep spices before they loose their taste or get yukkie. Here is what I found walking about in Los Gatos California’s Napa Style store! A cardboard cylinder with stacked small containers with screw lids on them! Not only is it small, about 1 inch in diameter, the containers have spices in them. The label states these will stay useable for up to 4 years if stowed in the cardboard tube in a cool place. It was $29 plus tax and I really am liking that is does not take up precious space in my galley and I have lots of choices to add to local food finds in our travels. Wow!  This fits nicely into my galley pantry and is a first must for cooking or grilling as we travel.  I like the fact it can be stored for a long time .  The portion sizes help keep thing fresh and we can replace spices with our favorites if needed.

On the way up to Six Sigma Ranch we stopped at the St. Helena Olive Oil Company to pick up our favorite rosemary infused oil.  We asked the sales person how long we can store our olive oil?  Her answer was for up to 2 years from the press date!  So now we know how long we can store our spices and olive oil and the sizes we use fit nicely in our galley.

The following Monday we hooked up our Airstream for a day trip to Pietro Santo Winery just south of Hollister California and on the way to the Pinnacles National Park.  We were to meet one of the marketing staff to discuss a nice place to visit on our way to the new beautiful national park.  This is not a well traveled “wine trail” so it may be a nice side stop on our travels.  It was an overcast day but balmy and comfortable.    The directions from the winery took us south and away from the main roads to Hollister and Tres Pinos, California.  The Cienega Road is a lovely, quiet ranch road.  It is a paved 2 lane road.  The scenery is breath taking.  It is like being dropped into the 1800’s.  The time when cattle was king and hard working cowboys may appear on horseback at any moment. It is a winding quiet road, occasionally bumpy but no one is behind you honking, because you are slow.  Occasionally vehicles just passed by and people waved.

The wine trail is home to approximately 6 wineries, all closed on Mondays or have tastings by appointment only.  The tasting rooms all seem to be about a mile off the main road and there is very little signage to direct you.  Our appointment never materialized but the winery grounds are beautiful, clean, green and bottling was in progress.  They have an olive press in the tasting room building.   This is what I wanted to see.  Although the interview never came together the journey was beautiful.  Taking a wrong turn almost got us to the Pinnacles instead of homeward bound.  Airport Hwy is quiet and as we turned around we approached Tres Pinos, Balado Park and a small, good Mexican restaurant for a homey lunch.  This little community of 500 is very reminiscent of the old California I new growing up.  Had I not had my appointment on a new trail I would have missed the scenery we often dream about and it is nearby in the Gabilan Hills.
